Our Commitment to Safer Play
Next Draw Logic is an independent, informational platform. We do not sell tickets, accept wagers or process prize claims, and we are not affiliated with Ithuba Holdings or the South African National Lottery. Our results, statistics and prediction tools are published for entertainment and informational purposes only.
Because we write about lottery games, we take the wellbeing of our readers seriously. The lottery is a game of pure chance and should only ever be played for fun, with money you can comfortably afford to lose. This page exists to help you keep it that way, and to point you toward professional support if play stops being enjoyable.
Recognising a Gambling Problem
Gambling difficulties can affect anyone, regardless of age or income. It helps to be honest with yourself about your habits. You may be at risk if you experience any of the following:
- Spending more money or time on the lottery than you can afford or originally planned.
- Borrowing money, selling personal items, or using money meant for bills to buy tickets.
- "Chasing losses" — playing more in an attempt to win back money you have already lost.
- Lying to friends or family about how much you play or spend.
- Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are unable to gamble.
- Neglecting work, studies, relationships or responsibilities because of gambling.
- Feeling unable to stop or cut down, even when you want to.
A Quick Self-Assessment
If you are unsure whether your play is healthy, take a moment to answer these questions honestly:
- Do you ever spend more on the lottery than you intended?
- Have you tried to cut back or stop, but found you couldn't?
- Do you play to escape worry, stress or low mood?
- Have you ever hidden your playing from people close to you?
- Has gambling ever caused you financial or relationship difficulty?
Answering "yes" to even one of these can be an early warning sign. It does not mean you have a gambling disorder, but it may be a good moment to set firmer limits or reach out to a counsellor on 0800 006 008. This is not a clinical diagnosis — only a qualified professional can provide that.
Rules for Safe Play
To keep the lottery fun and safe, we recommend following these widely accepted responsible-play guidelines:
- Entertainment only: Treat lottery tickets as an entertainment expense, not as a way to make money or an investment strategy.
- Set a strict budget: Decide on a fixed amount you are willing to lose each month and stick to it, regardless of the jackpot size.
- Set a time limit: Decide how much time you'll spend playing or checking results, and don't let it spill into the rest of your day.
- Never chase losses: Accept that losing is the most likely outcome. Trying to win money back almost always makes things worse.
- Play when calm and sober: Avoid buying tickets or making decisions when under the influence of alcohol or experiencing emotional distress.
- Take regular breaks: If you find yourself obsessively checking numbers, step away for a few weeks.
- Balance it out: Keep gambling as a small part of a life that includes other hobbies, people and activities.
Tools to Stay in Control
Most licensed South African operators provide built-in safer-gambling tools. If you play through any official platform, look for settings that let you:
- Deposit limits: Cap how much you can deposit per day, week or month.
- Spend & loss limits: Set a ceiling on how much you can spend or lose in a given period.
- Time-outs ("cool-off"): Lock yourself out for a short period — a day, a week or longer — when you need a break.
- Reality checks: Enable on-screen reminders of how long you have been playing.
Setting these limits in advance — while you are calm and thinking clearly — is one of the most effective ways to keep play under control.
Self-Exclusion Options
If you feel you are losing control, South Africa's National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) operates a formal self-exclusion process. This legal mechanism allows you to ban yourself from participating in licensed gambling activities for a minimum defined period.
You can usually request self-exclusion directly through your licensed online betting provider's account settings, or by contacting the NRGP helpline on 0800 006 008. Once in place, operators are required to prevent you from opening accounts or placing bets for the duration of the exclusion.
Common Gambling Myths
Many gambling problems are fuelled by mistaken beliefs about how the lottery works. Here are a few worth clearing up:
Help for Family & Friends
Problem gambling affects more than just the person playing. If you are worried about a loved one, you are not alone and support is available to you too.
- Talk to them calmly and without judgement — focus on your concern for their wellbeing.
- Avoid lending money or covering gambling debts, which can unintentionally enable the behaviour.
- Encourage them to contact the helpline, and consider seeking guidance for yourself.
The NRGP and SARGF both offer free counselling and support for the families of people affected by gambling, not only for the gamblers themselves.
Protection of Minors (18+)
18+ only: It is strictly illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to play the South African National Lottery or use online betting platforms. Next Draw Logic is intended for an adult audience and we do not knowingly market our content to minors.
If you share a computer or mobile device with children, we strongly recommend using parental-control or content-filtering software to block access to gambling-related websites and apps. Most operating systems and browsers also include built-in family-safety settings you can enable for free.
National Support Resources
The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) and the National Responsible Gambling Programme offer free counselling, outpatient treatment and support for problem gamblers and their families across the country.
