Understanding the SA Lotto Bonus Ball

The Bonus Ball is the most misunderstood part of SA Lotto — and the reason many players miss valid prizes.

When you buy a SA Lotto ticket, you choose 6 numbers from 1 to 52. During the draw, Ithuba draws 6 main numbers and then draws a 7th ball — the Bonus Ball — from the remaining 46 balls still in the machine. You never choose the Bonus Ball yourself.

Here's the key: if one of your 6 chosen numbers happens to match the Bonus Ball, you qualify for a higher prize division. For example, if you matched 2 main numbers AND your Bonus Ball number came up, you win Division 8 instead of nothing. If you matched 5 main numbers AND your Bonus Ball hit, you win Division 2 instead of Division 3.

This is why our checker does more than simple number matching — it automatically cross-references your 6 choices against both the 6 main balls and the Bonus Ball in every draw, then tells you exactly which division you qualified for. Many players miss Division 6 and Division 8 wins because they don't know to check this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about checking SA Lotto tickets, the Bonus Ball, and prize claims.

How do I check my SA Lotto ticket online?

Use the checker form above — enter your 6 numbers (1–52) from your playslip and click "Check My Ticket Now". Our system instantly scans the last 100 official SA Lotto draws and shows every draw where your numbers qualified for a prize division. No registration, no cost.

Why doesn't the checker ask for a Bonus Ball?

You don't choose a Bonus Ball on your SA Lotto playslip. You only select 6 main numbers (1–52). The Bonus Ball is drawn automatically from the remaining 46 balls in the machine after the 6 main numbers are drawn. If any of your 6 chosen numbers matches the Bonus Ball, you qualify for a higher prize tier. Our checker detects this automatically across all 100 draws.

How far back does this Lotto ticket checker search?

This SA Lotto ticket checker scans the last 100 official draws. Since SA Lotto is drawn twice weekly (Wednesdays and Saturdays), 100 draws covers approximately one full year — giving you the best possible chance of catching any unclaimed prizes before the 365-day expiry deadline.

What is the minimum I need to match to win a Lotto prize?

The minimum winning combination in SA Lotto is Division 8: exactly 2 main numbers plus the Bonus Ball. Without the Bonus Ball, you need at least 3 main numbers to win Division 7. See the full prize division table above for all 8 tiers and their requirements.

Did I win the lotto if this checker shows a match?

If this checker shows a match, it means your numbers qualify for a prize division in that specific draw. However, you should always verify the result officially at nationallottery.co.za and present your original physical ticket to claim. This tool is for verification assistance only — the original ticket is required for official prize claims.

How long do I have to claim a SA Lotto prize?

Winning SA Lotto tickets must be claimed within exactly 365 days of the draw date. After this deadline, unclaimed prizes are forfeited to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and cannot be recovered under any circumstances. This is why our checker scans up to 100 draws — to help you find any prizes you may have overlooked before they expire.

Can I check Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 here?

This page checks the main SA Lotto draw only (6/52 format). If you also played Lotto Plus 1 or Lotto Plus 2 on your ticket, use our dedicated checkers: Lotto Plus 1 Ticket Checker and Lotto Plus 2 Ticket Checker. Both tools work identically and scan the same 100-draw window.
